At Sapelo Strong, we are committed to creating a supportive and rewarding environment for all of our volunteers. This policy outlines our expectations for volunteers, the support you will receive, and the guidelines in place to ensure the safety and well-being of both our volunteers and the community we serve.

By volunteering with Sapelo Strong, you are making a lasting impact on the lives of those affected by the Marsh Landing tragedy, and we are grateful for your dedication and service.

Volunteer Expectations and Code of Conduct


To ensure a productive and respectful environment, we ask that all volunteers adhere to the following guidelines:


Professionalism:
Volunteers are expected to treat all staff, community members, and fellow volunteers with respect and courtesy. Please arrive on time for your volunteer shifts and be prepared to complete your assigned tasks.

  • Commitment:
    When you sign up for a volunteer shift, we rely on your participation. If you are unable to fulfill your commitment, please notify your supervisor as soon as possible.

  • Safety and Health:
    Volunteers must follow all safety guidelines provided during orientation and training. This includes wearing appropriate protective gear, maintaining cleanliness, and adhering to COVID-19 protocols if applicable.

  • Confidentiality:
    Volunteers may be exposed to sensitive personal information while working with families in need. It is important to respect the privacy and confidentiality of those you are helping.

Non-Discrimination:
Sapelo Strong values diversity and inclusion. We do not tolerate discrimination or harassment of any kind based on race, gender, religion, or any other protected characteristic.

Be Treated with Respect and Dignity:
You are entitled to a respectful, inclusive, and supportive environment where you feel valued for your contributions.

  • Receive Training and Support:
    All volunteers will receive an orientation and training specific to their role. You will also have access to ongoing support from your volunteer supervisor.

  • Work in a Safe Environment:
    We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all volunteers. If you ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable, please notify us immediately.

  • Be Recognized for Your Contributions:
    We regularly celebrate the achievements and contributions of our volunteers through recognition programs, events, and certificates of service.

Background Checks and Confidentiality


Certain volunteer roles that involve direct interaction with vulnerable populations, including children and families, may require a background check. This is to ensure the safety of everyone involved. By volunteering, you agree to undergo a background check if required. Additionally, all volunteers must sign a confidentiality agreement to protect the privacy of the families and individuals we serve.

Training and Support


At Sapelo Strong, we believe in setting our volunteers up for success. All volunteers will receive comprehensive training tailored to their specific role. This includes safety guidelines, an overview of the Sapelo Strong mission, and practical instructions for completing tasks. Throughout your time with us, you will have a dedicated supervisor who can answer questions, provide feedback, and offer support.


Orientation and Training Sessions:
All volunteers must attend a brief orientation and training session before their first shift. These sessions cover everything from safety protocols to role-specific instructions.

  • Ongoing Support:
    Volunteers will have access to a dedicated supervisor who will provide guidance and assistance throughout your volunteer experience.

  • Resources for Success:
    We provide all the materials and tools needed for you to succeed in your volunteer role, including safety gear, communication tools, and any necessary supplies

Recognition and Appreciation


We deeply appreciate the time and energy our volunteers dedicate to helping the Sapelo Island community. We are committed to recognizing and celebrating your contributions through regular appreciation events, certificates of service, and leadership opportunities.


Volunteer Appreciation Events:
Volunteers will be invited to special events held in their honor as a way of saying thank you for your hard work.

  • Certificates of Service:
    At the completion of your volunteer service, you will receive a certificate recognizing your contributions to Sapelo Strong.

  • Opportunities for Leadership:
    As you gain experience and demonstrate leadership, there may be opportunities to take on greater responsibilities within the organization.

Volunteer Dismissal Policy


While we value the contributions of all volunteers, we reserve the right to dismiss any volunteer whose actions violate our code of conduct, safety protocols, or negatively impact the reputation of Sapelo Strong. Volunteers will be given notice and the opportunity to address any concerns before dismissal.


VOLUNTEER-BASED POLICY

The Sapelo Strong coalition relies on volunteers to support its mission of providing relief and support to the Sapelo Island community. This Volunteer Policy outlines expectations and guidelines for volunteers representing the coalition's five organizations.

Volunteer Eligibility

  • Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

  • Volunteers under 18 must have parental or guardian consent.

  • Some roles may require background checks based on the volunteer's scope of work.

Roles and Responsibilities

Volunteers may engage in roles such as:

  • Event setup and teardown

  • Food and supply distribution

  • Fundraising support

  • Administrative tasks

  • Rebuilding homes or facilities

  • Providing medical or counseling services (if qualified)

Background Checks

Volunteers working directly with sensitive groups, such as children or families affected by the Sapelo Strong initiative, may be subject to background checks.

Code of Conduct

All volunteers are expected to:

  • Treat participants, staff, and fellow volunteers with respect.

  • Follow instructions and safety protocols.

  • Maintain confidentiality where applicable.

  • Report any issues or concerns to their supervisor.

Volunteer Support

  • Orientation: All volunteers will receive an orientation on the coalition’s mission and the specific role they will be performing.

  • Supervision: Volunteers will be assigned to a supervisor from one of the coalition organizations.

Waiver of Liability

By participating in volunteer activities, you agree to waive all claims against Sapelo Strong and its affiliated organizations for any injuries or losses incurred while volunteering.

Volunteer Dismissal

The coalition reserves the right to dismiss volunteers for violations of this policy, misconduct, or failure to adhere to guidelines.
